Originating with the Ghawazee people, the Shamadan (or candelabrum), is commonly used in tribal celebrations throughout the Middle East, from North Africa to Iraq. It is especially popular at weddings where the belly dancer balances the Shamadan on her head to light the way for the wedding party in a procession called the Zeffa (or Zaffa). While candles are the traditional choice, more modern adaptations use faux candles for convenience and safety. The beauty and drama created by incorporating this unusual prop into a dance routine has also made it a popular choice in theatrical productions.'s Shamadan are hand-made in Egypt and are a great choice for any event that calls for the use of this unique prop.
